To the south of Hexham and Haydon bridge lies the valley of the river Allen. Historically these were estate lands and iron ore was mined here. Nowadays the country lanes here are quiet and tranquil.

Allendale itself is very pleasant. It has a large and spacious town square with some great pubs.

 You can get a feel for the town itself from the picture below and then there is a video of the new year tar barrel festivities at the bottom of this page.

The Allendale valley is a good place to go hunting for Bastle houses, for example

Housty Bastle house, near Catton

and Nine Dargues close to Allendale itself.
