Ancroft church tower

We often forget that very often the church tower must have been one of the safest places in a village.

Ancroft is just 5 miles or so south of Berwick and the border with Scotland. So refuge was important!

Reading Robert Hugill's Borderland Castles and Peles there is a sad reminder of plagues:

"He was shown the field of the "broomie-huts" to which the plague victims were carried by panic stricken villagers and left under rustic shelters of broom".

If they didnt recover...well the shelter and bodies were burned.
