Eglingham Castle

Half a mile off the Alnwick to Rothbury road lies Eglingham Castle.

Started in the mid 13th century by John de Eglingham ( 1230 - 1256) as a large two story hall house. However the coming border wars and incursions of the reivers from Scotland led to later fortifications. Nevertheless when you look at the location and position from a defensive angle you can see that this was primarily a house which was later fortified.
