Heavenfield, Tynedale, Northumberland
Most visitors will think of Heavenfield as the tea room on the military road. As you leave Chollerford
behind going east to Newcastle, the road climbs steeply and on the top, left hand side is the tea room.
However there is a church here and it was also the site of a large battle in Saxon times.Back in 635 AD, the
heathen led by Pegan were defeated and following on from this military success Aidan was invited down from Iona. He
chose Lindisfarne as his base and from this came the illuminated chronicles and the strong tradition of
Christianity in Northumberland.
