Rural branch lines of Northumberland
Railways were once a vital way to keep communities together across the large open spaces of
Northumberland. There were many rural lines and many more were proposed and then left unfulfilled.
My interest was inspired by the small booklet "Rural branch lines of Northumberland" by C R Warn published by Frank
Graham in 1975 ( ISB 0 859103 077 2 ).
The pages that follow attempt to portray the beauty of what was once the Northumberland rural lines.
The picture below reminds me of what it must have looked like when the trains came to cross the Lambley Viaduct.
